Lot 13: This Afghan Turkaman weave rug, sized 91×66 cm, features a design inspired by the 16th-century Safavid Garden motif. Hand-knotted in Kabul, Afghanistan, it is crafted using handspun wool and coloured with natural vegetable dyes, resulting in a rich and vibrant palette. Uniquely, this rug was woven as a Varigeh (sampler rug)—a sample piece created by the weaver to demonstrate their skill in order to secure a weaving contract. Its compact size and intricate design make it a rare, collectible piece that reflects both artistic heritage and exceptional craftsmanship.
